Madame Marie-France runs the Apollonide brothel where her coterie of 12 girls tends to the whims and fancies of the wealthy gentlemen clientele. They all have to pay Madame for their clothes and other finery, essentially leaving them in debt to her for the rest of their working lives. One girl, Madeleine, falls foul of a violent client, who slashes the sides of her mouth and leaves her permanently disfigured.
