A faithful pooch called Red Dog arrives in the mining town of Dampier, Western Australia, and quickly befriends all of the locals. The animal forms a special bond with bus driver John Grant, who is dating company secretary Nancy. On the night of their engagement, John tells Red Dog to stay while he proposes to his sweetheart but he never returns, killed in a motorcycle accident on the way home. However, Red Dog doesn't know about his master's tragic fate and he dutifully waits for John.
