Re-release of Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 drama, as part of the NFT's retrospective of the acclaimed Danish's director's work. The film follows Jeanne, a country maid from Orleans who defied the British by leading the French troops to victory on the battlefield. Betrayed by her fellow countrymen loyal to the enemy, she was accused of heresy by a church court. Refusing to recant her so-called sins, Jeanne was tortured and then burnt at the stake in the courtyard at Rouen castle.
